Flavio Manzoni and Ferrari Design Team

Red Dot: Design Team of the Year 2019

This year’s “Red Dot: Design Team of the Year” title goes to Flavio Manzoni and the Ferrari Design Team in Maranello. Flavio Manzoni became Senior Vice-President for Design at Ferrari in 2010. Since the Italian car manufacturer was founded in 1947, he is the first head designer to have succeeded in building a successful Ferrari Design Team.

The models designed by Flavio Manzoni and the Ferrari Design Team won 14 awards in the Red Dot Design Award in the years 2015 to 2019 alone. Ferrari is the first car manufacturer in the history of the competition to win the top distinction – the Red Dot: Best of the Best - five times in a row – for the Ferrari models FXX-K, 488 GTB, J50, Portofino and Monza SP1.

Thanks to this achievement, the brand now also leads the Red Dot Ranking in the Automotive Design category for the first time. This is an outstanding accomplishment that will be recognised this year with the honorary title “Red Dot: Design Team of the Year”.

Designing dreams

Maranello. The small Italian town in the Emilia-Romagna region is synonymous around the world with the brand and the myth that is Ferrari. This is where the dream cars of tomorrow are made, which feature technical innovations that shape our idea of the future and whose timeless language of form endures for generations.

Since the mid-1990s, Ferrari’s company has transformed into a centre of modern industrial architecture. On Viale Enzo Ferrari, the campus street that bears the company founders name, a new dream factory that makes customers‘ dreams come true has emerged: Ferrari Centro Stile.

The dream factory

The architectural project was directed by the Ferrari Design Team under the guidance of architect Flavio Manzoni. The the engineering project was developed in collaboration with the Design International studio of London and the Planning studio of Bologna.

On a space of 5,000 square metres, a modern studio has been created for the 100 designers and employees of the in-house design team in addition to a presentation room with a terrace for presenting new models. Additionally, a Tailor Made area where the company’s customers can configure their own customised dream car was established.

The Tailor Made area

The Tailor Made area turns each Ferrari into a unique piece for its owner. The designers use virtual previews to show the customer his or her individually made vehicle in real time.
